Dachau

Dachau, a suburb of Munich, has the dubious distinction of being the first concentration camp.  Primarily developed in 1933 to house up to 6000 political prisoners in 34 barracks, at the end of the war there were more than 30,000 people crammed in.  After the war, the camp served as housing for war refugees.  Today the property is home to a memorial, several original buildings (including crematoriums) and an informative museum.
